TORONTO – The City of Toronto remains under a heat alert, Friday.
The city’s medical officer of health, Dr. David McKeown, issued the alert — the first one of 2013 — on Thursday. It was extended Friday.
This is also the time of year that people fire up the air conditioner, and in some cases, find out it is not working.
Husky Air service manager Alex says before turning it on make sure your furnace filter is clean as well as the area around the outdoor unit, and if it’s not working, to call a professional.
Dr. Michael Finkelstein, Toronto’s associate medical officer of health, said a hot day early in the season is harder for most than later in the summer because our bodies haven’t adjusted.
“They need to change their behaviour. They also should be aware of how heat affects others around them so check on isolated individuals or older individuals.”
People can visit air-conditioned spaces across the city, including shopping malls, local libraries or community centres to get relief from the heat. Click here for a list.

The city’s splash pads are currently open, but the outdoor pools don’t open until June 15. Click here for a list of splash pads.
Twelve heat alerts and nine extreme heat alerts were issued for Toronto in 2012.
