TORONTO, Ont. – With temperatures expected to reach 30 C, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David McKeown, declared a heat alert for the city, Friday.
CityNews meteorologist Harold Hosein says areas north and east of the GTA may experience scattered showers.
During a heat alert residents are encouraged to stay cool, drink plenty of fluids and check on family and friends.
Health officials advise that the public takes extra care with seniors, infants and young children, those with a chronic illness or those with limited housing, who all may be at higher risk during a heat alert.
Some other suggestions include drinking lots of fluids, even before you feel thirsty, going to air-conditioned locations like shopping malls and libraries and wearing light, loose-fitting clothing.
Strenuous outdoor activities should also be limited, while people are reminded to not leave children, seniors or pets unattended in a car.
Avoid the sun and stay in the shade or use an umbrella
Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day
Never leave seniors, children or pets unattended in a car.
This is Toronto’s 12th heat alert of 2012 – the first one being on May 28. There have also been nine extreme heat alerts, far above the average number of these types of alerts.
